Embracing the Mid-century Modern
When our house hunt officially began in January 2017 there were a couple things I knew. I knew I wanted a pool, I knew I wanted some character, and I knew we were definitely ready to buy in an established area. Throughout my teen years I grew up in a newer, nice, more cookie-cutter neighborhood; which is what I thought I always wanted. As I grew into my adult years I realized something new... I not only wanted, but needed a home with character and it's own personality. In my mind at the time what that meant is what is trendy in the world of "character" today, thanks to Fixer Upper... grey and white with farm or country touches. What I didn't realize is that it could manifest through other architectural styles from different eras.
Throughout our entire house hunt we looked at roughly thirty houses; our weekends were busy to say the least. Initially we put an offer on another house that went into a bidding war. Sadly we knew it wouldn't appraise for how high the price went up and could not come up a THIRD time..
At the moment what I didn't know was that the home we would eventually find and purchase was truly the right one for us. The location of our new home was a huge factor and we're much happier we ended up in a home that is more conveniently located and near other great neighborhoods. So there we were just shy of our first wedding anniversary getting settled into our new home; we can't sit still if you didn't notice.
Projects, projects, projects... A home where everything is new obviously sounded ideal, but that can be found in an older home with remodeling and upgrades; which is what we scored. Our home was built in 1975 but has had many things redone within the past few years, win for us on that one. We have learned over the past few months that every home project we begin takes longer than expected with more trips to the hardware store too, but thankful for us our projects have been ones we've wanted to take on. I like that we can "make it our own" in that way even if it does seem never ending. I'm not sure how many times I have already said, "we're almost there". (while laughing to keep from crying)
As far as the home style goes, the original direction I planned for this post, Mid-century Modern is something I'm learning to work in while decorating. It makes it's appearances here and there and I think over the years it will only shine through more. I'm really just embracing the clean lines and large windows that integrate nature.
To end this for now I will admit that I recently drove by the house we originally put an offer on and I didn't feel any particular sadness, just relief to be where we are.
