My Journey to Non-Toxic
Over the past couple years I have started to make changes to become more non-toxic. I figured starting to make little swaps would be fairly easy but make a big difference. I wanted to do my best to cut chemicals and products not natural to my body. I decided to start with some personal care and home items in addition to the whole foods we already choose. Our organic food consumption was minimal but has increased over the years and even more so when I got pregnant. My plan for my family is to continue with whole, organic foods and educate myself on what other easy changes we can make as time goes on. Here are a few things that I started with to cut toxins, though there have been plenty more swaps since.
Antiperspirant changed to more natural deodorant. Many of the myths around the cons of antiperspirants have been debunked, so why is it toxic? If you can use a product with less chemicals, wouldn't you? I decided that I would rather not put excess aluminum compounds into my body if I didn't have to. I have never been a majorly sweaty person so it was easy to make the switch. My favorite brand that I use from the grocery store is Schmidts, in the lavender and sage scent. Since being postpartum I was noticing that I needed to find something else, my usual just wasn't cutting it... I recently started using the Kopari Coconut Oil Deodorant (fragrance free version is still not on ThinkDirty/EWG App have gone back to Schmidts) and it has worked well; I might be sticking to this one for a while. (See what I did there?) *Fragrance-free version is still not on ThinkDirty/EWG App have gone back to Schmidts.
Tampons were swapped for organic cotton. I wanted to switch to organic cotton for my feminine products to avoid using products containing yucky pesticides, herbicides, and insecticides in such an absorbent part of my body. Helping out those who farm and process organic cotton along the way and decreased water use are a couple other huge benefits to this non-toxic swap. Plus, aren't non- GMO items always a win? My favorite brands that I use are Cora and Honest. Since making this change I definitely feel better about what I'm using for my lady bits and body.
Switching from candles to essential oils. Fake candle scents and added fragrance products along with trace amounts of carcinogenic smoke was a no-no for our home that I didn't want any longer. Initially, when I made the switch I used oils that I got from Whole Foods or on Amazon but have since become more educated on why I should use high quality oils. I feel, along with many others, that Young Living provides the best quality oils on the market due to their 'seed to seal' philosophy. Since I started using higher quality essential oils I have become obsessed with all they can do beyond smelling awesome. I also love learning about other amazing non-toxic products the company provides as well; looking at you Thieves. If you happen to see a candle in our home it is simply for looks and they are few and far between now.
I know I have just hit the tip of the iceberg in my journey to non-toxic but there are so many helpful tools that I already use for looking at my household and personal care products. Beauty items will be a whole other beast I am not looking forward to, Beauty Counter perhaps? Thank goodness for #momlife minimal makeup. So far two apps that I've found the most helpful in this journey are the EWG (Environmental Working Group) and Think Dirty apps. All joking aside, I highly recommend taking a look at the products you use in your home and on your body to start your journey to non-toxic. Just say "no" to toxins.
